Bungie's upcoming season two for Marathon promises a dramatic shake-up, with far-reaching progress wipes that will reset the player base to the same starting point. This bold move is designed to revitalize the game and encourage players to embark on a fresh journey. The release date for season two is set for June 2nd, and it brings a host of changes that will impact every player's experience.
One of the most significant changes is the reset of player progress. When season two begins, runner levels, ranks, vault and loadout contents, credits, schemas, faction levels & upgrades, and priority contracts will all be reset to zero. This means that players will have to start from scratch, building their characters and strategies anew. However, Bungie has shown consideration for players' previous efforts by retaining access to unlocked factions, earned and purchased cosmetics, codex entries, and any LUX and Silk currency. Additionally, vault sizes will be increased, and faction progression will be sped up, making the grind more manageable.
To further incentivize players, Bungie has introduced a sponsored kit system. Players who reach certain levels in season one will be rewarded with free purple-rarity sponsored kits in season two. For instance, those who hit level 75 before the start of season two will receive a free purple-rarity kit to help them gear back up. This system aims to provide a head start to players who have invested significant time and effort in the game.
The upcoming season, titled Nightfall, is shrouded in mystery, but Bungie has hinted at an intense and chaotic experience. Map events are guaranteed during each run starting May 19th, adding an extra layer of excitement. Locked room keys will now always drop from computer-controlled Warden enemies, making it easier for players to access previously locked areas. UESC forces will be more prevalent, with new Warden encounters across all maps (excluding Cryo Archive) and a "new threat" on Dire Marsh, introducing an additional challenge.
Furthermore, the Cryo Archive will be accessible daily from May 21st until the start of season two. This extended window allows players who haven't completed all the vaults or unlocked all codex entries to do so before the reset. It's a strategic move to ensure players have ample time to address any outstanding challenges before their accounts are wiped.
Despite the game's critical acclaim, Marathon has not met Sony's expectations in terms of popularity. The game's performance has contributed to a substantial $765m USD impairment loss for Bungie in the last financial year. The upcoming season two, with its progress wipes and fresh start, is a strategic move to reignite player interest and potentially turn the tide for this sci-fi extraction shooter.
